Free MP3 tagger (ID3)

This is a follow up post to “CloudBrain: Why can’t we code or answer emails“.  I and alot of other people on the Internet purchased a piece of junk application called FixTunes written by someone disguised as a company called CloudBrain.  Well after searching around on the Internet for a while I found a great site called MusicBrainz.org.  They offer a huge database of songs (added by the community).  They contain all the information to create great ID3 tags for you mis-labled MP3 collection, whats more its actually free!!!  They do ask you to register and pay $10 dollars, but this doesn’t seem to be required to retag your MP3 files.  They offer quite a few different applications (written by different people) to do this.  I downloaded and installed MusicBrainz Classic Tagger, which is one of their offerings.  I used FixTunes to tag as much music as possible, but it had 191 songs it couldn’t identify.  I have just loaded those 191 songs into MusicBrainz Classic Tagger, and it has identified 87 of the songs.  This isn’t bad considering it would have most probably identified all the songs FixTunes did.  I still have 104 MP3’s that can’t be tagged automatically.  It even gave the songs it did identify a percent rating, so you know if it “thinks” it has the right information.  When you do write tag information to the MP3’s, it copies them to a new directory which you have to setup manually.  You also have to setup the naming convention for it to use.  If you click on View.. Options.. and change the settings of the Naming and Directories tab, everything should work out fine.

Try it out and let me know what you think.

CloudBrain: Why can’t we code or reply to emails?

•December 19, 2006 • 66 Comments

Just a heads up for everyone out there, please try and avoid using/buying any products from CloudBrain, in particular FixTunes, but I am sure they run all their services the same way; non-existantly.  I purchased FixTunes from them about 3 weeks ago, it was a nice piece of software and it was going to help sort out my MP3 collection (it uses amazon to add all the correct ID3 tags to your MP3’s).  After I purchased the authorization code so I could ‘lookup’ more then 300 MP3’s the software crashed.  It crashes ever single time you load it.  I have tried more times than I can count to have this problem fixed, resolved or refunded.  I have never received one response from any email I have sent.

Paypal is also about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.  They only reclaim refunds for items that have never been delivered, not items that are sold that don’t work as advertised.  So I have now given up trying to reclaim the money they stole from me, so I’ll just warn everyone against using their services.

FixTunes crashing No refund!

UPDATE: I have tried calling the company phone number 877-211-6714 or 804-545-9184 but all 3 options you get voicemail.  It seems like this is a shell of a company who has one person working there.  If you visit the website, the are a few job openings available.  It seems there is a position available for everyone but the CEO and secretary (and who needs a secretary with a phone system that redirects all calls to voice mail).

Opera: Creating custom link buttons

•December 13, 2006 • Leave a Comment

I have switched over to Opera from the useless Firefox and down right ugly Internet Explorer.  One thing I wanted to do was create some custom buttons that linked to some of my favorite sites in the ”start bar” (the little bar the pops down when you open a new tab or click in the address bar).

It is pretty simple to create these buttons and you can do it in notepad.

To my dismay the WordPress blogging system strips some of the information off the link.

So here is a page I made earlier that has them, and some links to sites with more information.

Update: I’ve also added some PHP trickery to the page so you can create your links via a form, but don’t thank me.

How-To: Download a Torrent

•December 12, 2006 • 11 Comments

This is in response to a comment left on this site for someone who is “tech-impaired” to download an episode of house.

  1. Download uTorrent, which is in my opinion the best .torrent client.  Click on the following link and save it to your desktop http://download.utorrent.com/1.6/utorrent.exe
  2. Once you have uTorrent on your desktop, open it up by double clicking on it.  It will ask you a few questions, one being do you want to make this the default application for handling .torrent files? Select Yes, it will also ask you if you want to create a shortcut on your desktop? Select No (because it’s on your desktop).  Also you can click OK on the speed guide screen.
  3. Click on the following link http://www.isohunt.com/download/15505505/house
  4. You browser should ask you what you want to do with the file (save it/open it).  Click Open.
  5. This should load the .torrent into uTorrent, it will pop-up and ask which files you want to download, by default it will download all files in the .torrent (in this case there is only one)
  6. Click OK.
  7. The file(s) will now download, so just sit back, relax and wait a while.  Sometimes a long while. (To those in the know, yes you should check to make sure the random port can be forwarded back to the computer through NAT router, but in this case it seems a little high-tech)
  8. After the file has finished, in the done column it will say Finished/100% (depending on the version of uTorrent) open your My Documents (via the start menu or on the desktop), then open the Downloads folder, there should be a file in there called House MD S03E09 HDTV XviD-XOR.avi (or something similar)
  9. Next download Codec Pack all in one (you need a special codec to play the downloaded video) click here http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=1716&s=67
  10. Open the file, and install.  You won’t be sure of 99% of the options (and I don’t have time to install it). So my advice will be click next, accept license agreement, click next, next, next and finish. (maybe more or less next’s).
  11. Once it is installed go back to your My Document\Downloads folder, double click on the the House MD S03E09 HDTV XviD-XOR file, it should load in your default media player (most probably some verion of Windows Media Player)

If that doesn’t work for some reason, leave a comment and tell me where you get stuck, this may not be 100% because I have written it in 10 minutes from memory.Hope you have fun!

I am not 100% sure but this is probably illegal, even though it shouldn’t be, after all you do pay to get the channel on your TV, but hey, there is a difference between illegal and immoral.

Todays Torrents: House Episode 5

Where have all the torrents gone?

•October 16, 2006 • 1 Comment

If you visiting this site looking for new torrents, sorry there aren’t any.  I have been really busy with work (which I am now no longer going to! Yey for me) and Fox has decided to postpone all the decent shows so they can run Major League Boring, I mean baseball.

So thats my story and I’m sticking to it.  I did download A Scanner Darkly DVDRip, but it was a screener and had excessive black and white moments and the usual scrolling anti-pirate text.

Finally fixed Firefox copy and paste bug!

•October 16, 2006 • Leave a Comment

I am sure there are more than a few people affected by either the “Copy and Paste” or the “Type Ahead Find” bug in Firefox.  This has been bugging me for ages now, and I have moved to Internet Explorer 7, Flock (which is based on Firefox) and Opera browsers (only to come back to Firefox).  Apparently all these bugs are related to the tabbed browsing so hyped up by Firefox.  If like me you never use tabbed browsing (because were old school) then you can install an extension that removes all tabbed browsing functions, and seems to fix the bugs mentioned above.

Tab Killer 1.0.2005012901, by SHIMODA Hiroshi, released on Jan 24, 2006

I have been using this extension for about 30 minutes and everything is going swimmingly.

Todays Torrents: Heroes, Prison Break, House and movies…

•September 27, 2006 • 1 Comment

A new series added to the line-up this week, Heroes looks very promising;

1. Heroes Chapter One – Very promising, interesting story line. Can’t wait for next weeks, but I’ll have to.

2. Prison Break Season 2 Episode 6 – Is it me or is this not as good as the previous season.

3. House Season 3 Episode 4 – I love House, one of my favorite shows, and I have it on good authority this episode is very funny.

4. The Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift – I know this is an old one, but a friend of mine said it was good, so I’ll give it a try.

5. The Omen (2006) – Ummm, I never watched the original so this will be a surprise for me.

6. Josh Turner Your Man - Country artist, I quite like the first song ‘Would you go with me’.

That will do folks, even though I haven’t stated all movies are aXXo DVD Rips and the TV Shows are all good quality LoL or VTV releases.
