How-To: Download a Torrent
This is in response to a comment left on this site for someone who is “tech-impaired” to download an episode of house.
- Download uTorrent, which is in my opinion the best .torrent client. Click on the following link and save it to your desktop http://download.utorrent.com/1.6/utorrent.exe
- Once you have uTorrent on your desktop, open it up by double clicking on it. It will ask you a few questions, one being do you want to make this the default application for handling .torrent files? Select Yes, it will also ask you if you want to create a shortcut on your desktop? Select No (because it’s on your desktop). Also you can click OK on the speed guide screen.
- Click on the following link http://www.isohunt.com/download/15505505/house
- You browser should ask you what you want to do with the file (save it/open it). Click Open.
- This should load the .torrent into uTorrent, it will pop-up and ask which files you want to download, by default it will download all files in the .torrent (in this case there is only one)
- Click OK.
- The file(s) will now download, so just sit back, relax and wait a while. Sometimes a long while. (To those in the know, yes you should check to make sure the random port can be forwarded back to the computer through NAT router, but in this case it seems a little high-tech)
- After the file has finished, in the done column it will say Finished/100% (depending on the version of uTorrent) open your My Documents (via the start menu or on the desktop), then open the Downloads folder, there should be a file in there called House MD S03E09 HDTV XviD-XOR.avi (or something similar)
- Next download Codec Pack all in one (you need a special codec to play the downloaded video) click here http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=1716&s=67
- Open the file, and install. You won’t be sure of 99% of the options (and I don’t have time to install it). So my advice will be click next, accept license agreement, click next, next, next and finish. (maybe more or less next’s).
- Once it is installed go back to your My Document\Downloads folder, double click on the the House MD S03E09 HDTV XviD-XOR file, it should load in your default media player (most probably some verion of Windows Media Player)
If that doesn’t work for some reason, leave a comment and tell me where you get stuck, this may not be 100% because I have written it in 10 minutes from memory.Hope you have fun!
I am not 100% sure but this is probably illegal, even though it shouldn’t be, after all you do pay to get the channel on your TV, but hey, there is a difference between illegal and immoral.

Very basic. A good intro for new BT users.
I consider myself to be an advnace user and have been thinking of writing a imtermeadite users. If I do I will definitely link to ya ^_^
Just a note though. Instead of using WMP I would suggest all new users go for VLC. Chances are a new user won’t encounter a file that VLC won’t play.
Also, love the show you used for your example.
Tonight there is a new ep on TV. Can’t wait for it lol.
And, I dunno your level of expereince with uTorrent, but I have severel written on my blog you may be interested in reading.
Have a good one.
Hey bardicknowledge
Thanks for the comment, I hope you watched House last night! I just threw this together for someone who needed to download the previous House episode but had no idea, it’s supposed to be idiot proof (is that possible?). They wrote me a nice email saying everything worked, but I understand what your mean about VLC player, but I think the codec pack I have them install has about ever popular codec in it. Drop me a line if you make a more advanced how-to
Thanks for visiting.
I am having a BIG problem with my utorrent. I already opened up my random port and everything, switched off access to upnp port in preferences, disabled dht, entered my max global speed after doing the speed test and it is taking me DAYS to download! I started downloading something last night and I just checked it is only 16.1%…this is still an accomplishment bc b4 it was starting and stopping, but it is driving me crazy. Any other suggestions on how to maximize speed? Please let me know for the sake of my delicate mental health lol.
Thanks!
Binteno
I have downloaded Lost.S03E08.HDTV.XviD-XOR however I am a beginner at this.
It has downloaded in a folder with many different files and not as a .avi file. How do I play this? Please help!
Hi Bintero! I assume what you have downloaded is the episode but it split across multiple compression archives. I have no idea what it would be, but if you goto http://www.7-zip.org, download 7-ZIP .exe 4.42 – After you install 7-Zip goto the directory where you downloaded your torrent, right click one of the files, on the context menu that shows up select 7-Zip – Extract files here, after it is done you should have another file that is an .avi file! Hope that helps, if not just leave another comment where you got stuck!
I am 100 percent sure buster. God will make me sure, a blessed assurance. youre not sure. Im not ‘impaired’ I am spiritually sound, blessed, and sufficient by the grace of God
