Free MP3 tagger (ID3)
![]()
This is a follow up post to “CloudBrain: Why can’t we code or answer emails“. I and alot of other people on the Internet purchased a piece of junk application called FixTunes written by someone disguised as a company called CloudBrain. Well after searching around on the Internet for a while I found a great site called MusicBrainz.org. They offer a huge database of songs (added by the community). They contain all the information to create great ID3 tags for you mis-labled MP3 collection, whats more its actually free!!! They do ask you to register and pay $10 dollars, but this doesn’t seem to be required to retag your MP3 files. They offer quite a few different applications (written by different people) to do this. I downloaded and installed MusicBrainz Classic Tagger, which is one of their offerings. I used FixTunes to tag as much music as possible, but it had 191 songs it couldn’t identify. I have just loaded those 191 songs into MusicBrainz Classic Tagger, and it has identified 87 of the songs. This isn’t bad considering it would have most probably identified all the songs FixTunes did. I still have 104 MP3’s that can’t be tagged automatically. It even gave the songs it did identify a percent rating, so you know if it “thinks” it has the right information. When you do write tag information to the MP3’s, it copies them to a new directory which you have to setup manually. You also have to setup the naming convention for it to use. If you click on View.. Options.. and change the settings of the Naming and Directories tab, everything should work out fine.
Try it out and let me know what you think.

Hey, I just tried out MusicBrainz and it seems interesting. The interface isn’t as nice as Fixtunes, but I like that it is distributed under a much nicer lisence. If you aren’t using your fixtunes product code, could you send it to me, so I can see how bad the registered version really is?

FixTunes works only when part of album information is already known. Partial tags, meaningful file name or folder name etc. In other ways it fail! Clear the tags and rename the files
MusicBrainz is interesting for the popular tracks. It do not work properly for classic music. Gracenode recognition service used by some of hardware vendors (SonyErricson cell phones etc.) – fails too on classic thing.
Well..I’m a day late and 24 bucks short!
I have over 22,000 songs on my Buffalo Link Station. All networked through “Sonos!”
It’s not so much that Fixtunes did do “pretty much” what it said it would…but, I have a major problem doing business with any company that won’t offer phone support!
I suggest staying away from their Clouded Brain!
There’s plenty of good companies that offer real help and as good or better a product!
